Intern Support

AWSP supports candidates for the principal internship with a variety of resources. Many of these resources focus on the Interstate School Leaders Licensure Consortium (ISLLC) Standards, a set of standards developed by the Council of Chief State School Officers in collaboration with the National Policy Board on Educational Administration to help strengthen preparation programs in school leadership. The standards were published by the Council in 1996 and have been adopted, adapted or used by most states in developing their own administrator standards and licensing policies.

Please click on the links below to access materials designed for principal interns:

Activities to Consider (PDF - 287 KB): When first entering the principal internship, candidates often ask, "What should I do now?" This resource provides a list of suggested activities and focus areas for interns and their supervising principals.

Tips for Mentoring Principal Interns (PDF - 92 KB): This document, generated by Washington State University's College of Education, reviews the role and responsibilities of the principal intern mentor. Included are examples of intern activities that relate to the six ISLLC standards.

Sample Letter to Students' Parents (Word doc): Use this letter as a template for your own; place on letterhead if possible!

Educational Leadership Policy Standards (PDF - 69 KB): In 2007, the National Board Policy Education Administration adopted policy standards for educational leadership. This document reviews the functions of an education leader in the context of the six ISLLC standards.

ISLLC Standard Benchmarks for Principal Certification (PDF - 61 KB): Based on strands for each ISLLC standard, these benchmarks are categorized by pre-serviceprofessional certification and career.

ISLLC Standards: This series of handouts provide an overview of the knowledge, dispositions and performances associated with each standard.

  • Standard One (PDF - 71 KB): A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by facilitating the development, articulation, implementation and stewardship of a vision of learning that is shared and supported by the school community.
  • Standard Two (PDF - 72 KB): A school administrator is an educational leader who promotes the success of all students by advocating, nurturing and sustaining a school culture and instructional program conducive to student learning and staff professional growth.
