AWSP's Legislative Efforts
2012-13 Legislative Platform
AWSP provides a strong, respected voice on state and national issues
affecting schools and principals alike. Our work in the Legislature has
earned AWSP an important place at the table when K-12 policy is being
crafted. This credibility comes as a result of the good work of members
who travel to Olympia and Washington, D.C., to provide the
principal’s perspective on current issues.
In addition to providing members with legislative information during
the legislative session via a weekly newsletter, Legislative Update,
AWSP also helps members identify and connect with their district
legislators. AWSP encourages members to talk with lawmakers at the state
and federal level. The principal’s perspective can provide
powerful insights into the challenges faced by today’s school
administrators.
AWSP’s governmental relations efforts and legislative platform
are focused through a state-wide, grassroots-patterned legislative
committee comprised of an elementary, middle level, and high school
level representative from each of Washington’s nine congressional
districts. Members of the committee are responsible for learning about
legislative issues, establishing lines of communication with all AWSP
members and developing the AWSP legislative platform.
Members can help support AWSP’s governmental relations efforts by
contributing to its Political Action Committee (PAC). AWSP’s PAC
is directed by a 13-member team of principals from around the state.
Each year, the PAC creates a legislative platform based on the issues it
believes are the most important to schools and principals. Funds from
the PAC are used to support candidates or issues that align with the
Association’s work and the PAC agenda.
