Middle Level Administrators Elect John Westerman to Board

Eastmont Jr. High Principal to serve on state principals’ board

OLYMPIA–June 5, 2007—Middle level principals and assistant principals in Washington state have elected Eastmont Jr. High Principal John Westerman as eastside vice president of the middle level board, a component board of the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP).

“We are very excited to welcome John to this new leadership role,” said Robert Arial, president, Association of Washington Middle Level Principals (AWMLP) and assistant principal of Meeker Middle School in Tacoma. “John brings a range of experience as an administrator and as a regional director to this position. We look forward to working with him in the coming months and know his leadership will be a positive addition to our executive team.”

As eastside vice president, Westerman will attend quarterly meetings of the 26-member AWMLP board of directors and executive committee and serve as co-chair of AWSP’s Principals’ Conference. In the 2009-10 school year, he will serve as the board’s president.

Westerman brings 25 years of educational experience to the board, including 13 as a principal and assistant principal. He holds a master’s in educational administration from Central Washington University as well as bachelor of arts degrees in English literature from the University of Washington and in speech from Washington State University.

“AWSP and AWMLP have provided me with great professional development growth opportunities throughout my career. AWSP is always there for its members. It is my hope to continue that effort and strengthen it,” said Westerman. “My current role as regional director has prepared me for future work in this organization. I was born and raised in eastern Washington and thoroughly understand the unique challenges we face including the increasing diversity of our clients as well as the rising poverty in our communities,” he added.

“I look forward to serving my colleagues from the eastern part of the state on the board.”
