About the Series

AWSP is partnering with the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), Washington State University (WSU), the Pacific Science Center and Washington State LASER to offer opportunities for principals to learn about key components of science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) from the administrator’s perspective.

A New Structure

This year’s series has a new structure with four sessions instead of three, and the opportunity to register for the entire series at a discount.

Audience

AWSP’s STEM Series is designed for K-12 building leaders such as principals, assistant principals, and district office staff.

  • Session 2: STEM Principal and Teacher Training – Developing a Shared STEM
    Vision for Your School

  • Session 3: STEM Principal and Teacher Training – Developing an Implementation Plan for Increasing STEM Learning Opportunities for Students In Your Schools

  • Session 4: Principal Training in the Evaluation of STEM Lessons

  • Full Series (Best Value): Register for the entire STEM Principal Leadership Series at the discounted rate of $1200 per person.

  • Individual Sessions: Register for one or more of the individual STEM sessions. Prices per session are listed with each session description, below.

The 2013-14 Series Schedule and Details

Session 1: The Retreat

July 22-25, 2013 | Sleeping Lady Resort, Leavenworth
Individual Price: $600 per person for members / $900 for non-members

Registration includes 3 nights lodging (two or three people to a cabin) and all meals. Please note that single rooms are NOT available.

Principals will work with presenters with expertise in various STEM related fields. Workshop will feature whole-group presentations, small group interactive sessions, and small group/personal reflection and application. Attendees will:

  • Learn how to develop a shared understanding of STEM education.

  • Unpack research-based effective learning experiences in science inquiry, mathematics problem-solving and engineering design.

  • Immerse themselves in the processes of science through an engaging and challenging STEM education scenario modeling instructional practices to deepen their understanding of teaching and learning in the STEM fields.

  • Focus on how an instructional leader can best support his or her teachers of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics through a study of best practices emerging in the research.


Session 2: STEM Principal and Teacher Training – Developing a Shared STEM Vision for Your School

2 days in the Fall of 2013 (Dates/Location TBA)
Individual Price: $500 per person for members / $800 for non-members
(Your four teacher leaders attend free)

Registration includes meals, but NOT lodging.

Bring up to four teacher leaders to attend day 2 only (at no additional cost) to work with you and presenters with expertise in various STEM related fields. Attendees will:

  • Learn how to develop a shared understanding of STEM education in their school.

  • Unpack research-based effective learning experiences in science inquiry, mathematics problem-solving and engineering design.

  • Immerse themselves in the processes of science through an engaging scenario modeling instructionalpractices to deepen their understanding of teaching and learning in the STEM.

  • Begin to develop a shared vision and plan for increasing STEM learning opportunities for students in their classrooms and schools.

  • Explore the connections readily made in the STEM classroom to the Common Core State Standards of English Language Arts and Mathematical Practices.
     

Session 3: STEM Principal and Teacher Training – Developing an Implementation Plan for Increasing STEM Learning Opportunities for Students In Your Schools

2 days in the Spring of 2014 (Dates/Location TBA)
Individual Price: $500 per person for members / $900 for non-members
(Your four teacher leaders attend free)

Registration includes meals, but NOT lodging.

Bring up to four teacher leaders to attend both days (at no additional cost) to work with you and presenters with expertise in various STEM related fields. Attendees will:

  • Continue to build a shared vision and plan for increasing STEM learning opportunities for all students in their classrooms and schools.

  • Develop specific action steps for engaging the entire school staff in STEM learning.

  • Explore the Next Generation Science Standards and the connection to their STEM vision and plan.

  • Examine current curriculum and design STEM lessons using that curriculum.

  • Continue to refine the connections between STEM learning and the ease of alignment to the Common Core State Standards of English Language Arts and Mathematical Practices.


Session 4: Principal Training in the Evaluation of STEM Lessons

2 days in July 2014 (Dates/Location TBA)
Individual Price: $500 per person for members / $900 for non-members

Registration includes lodging (two or three people to a cabin) and all meals.
Please note that single rooms are NOT available.

Principals will receive training in evaluation of STEM lessons using the instructional framework their district has selected. Attendees will work with instructors to:

  • Identify indicators within their instructional framework that connect with strong STEM instruction.

  • Identify critical “look fors” in STEM instruction.

  • Practice evaluating STEM instruction.

  • Work toward calibration of observation data with other attendees.
