Association of Washington Middle Level Principals

Distinguished Principal and Assistant Principal Award Programs

The Association of Washington Middle Level Principals (AWMLP) annually recognizes outstanding middle level principals and assistant principals in each of its 15 regions statewide.

Regional Distinguished Principals & Assistant Principals

The AWMLP Regional Director in each region will coordinate selection of their Regional Distinguished Principal and Regional Distinguished Assistant Principal using a process of their choice. If you are interested in nominating a colleague for recognition, please contact the Regional Director for your area.

Washington State Middle Level Principal of the Year

Each of the Regional Distinguished Principals are nominees for Washington State Middle Level Principal of the Year. For state selection, each regional nominee must complete the AWMLP Distinguished Principal of the Year program application providing the following supporting documents:

  • Response to one narrative prompt
  • A letter of recommendation from a supervisor
  • School Performance Report
    (e.g., state and local assessment)

Completed applications for Middle Level Principal of the Year from regional nominees are due to the AWMLP office mid-January each year. Application documents are provided to each regional distinguished principal directly. Completed applications may be mailed (1021 8th Avenue SE, Olympia, WA 98501), faxed (360.357.7966) or e-mailed to Annalee Braley.

Congratulations to Karen Owen as the 2010 Middle Level Principal of the Year in Washington state.

Washington State Assistant Principal of the Year

Each of the Regional Distinguished Assistant Principals selected are nominees for the state selection program. For state selection, each regional nominee must complete the AWMLP Distinguished Assistant Principal of the Year program application, and provide the following supporting documents:

  • Response to one narrative prompt
  • A letter of recommendation from a supervisor
  • School Performance Report
    (e.g., state and local assessment)

At the national level, one secondary assistant principal from each state is recognized annually. In our state, this award is presented by AWMLP every other year, alternating with the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals (WASSP). WASSP will select the 2011 Assistant Principal of the Year. AWMLP will select the 2012 Assistant Principal of the Year in the fall of 2011, from the 2009-10 and 2010-11 regional distinguished assistant principals' Washington State Assistant Principal of the Year applications.

Completed applications for Middle Level Assistant Principal of the Year from regional nominees are due to the AWMLP office mid-January each year. Application documents are provided to each regional distinguished assistant principal directly. National Principal & Assistant Principal of the Year Programs

The AWMLP Middle Level Principal of the Year and AWMLP Assistant Principal of the Year are Washington state's nominees for the national selection programs. The state winners must complete the national applications for consideration in the national selection processes.

  • The National Principal of the Year program is sponsored by the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) & MetLife.
  • The National Assistant Principal of the Year program is sponsored by NASSP & Virco, Inc.
