Middle Level Endorsements Survey
In May 2007, the following information was presented to the members
of the AWMLP Board of Directors along with a survey. Links to the survey
results are below.
CONTEXT/SET-UP: Two reports produced by the PESB in the last
two years, Math Counts and Washington’s System of
Preparing and Certifying Educators both questioned whether the
current K-8 endorsement ensures adequate content knowledge for teaching
middle grades. This combined with the
“highly-qualified” requirements under NCLB which will mean
that K-8 endorsed teachers will not be considered highly-qualified to
teach middle grades unless they pass content tests in the areas assigned
to teach has prompted us to consider the future of this
endorsement. Broadly, some of the options being considered
include:
- Option 1: Strengthen the subject knowledge competencies of
the K-8 endorsement;
- Option 2: Strengthen the subject knowledge competencies of
the K-8 endorsement and offer a K-6 endorsement for those
preservice candidates not intending to teach middle grades;
- Option 3: Change the current K-8 endorsement to K-6,
requiring that middle grades teachers earn either a Middle Level
Math/Science or Middle Level Humanities endorsement or hold one or more
secondary content endorsements.
- Option 4: The current system is improving and with
incremental changes it will be successful.
