Jocelyn McCabe MEDIA ADVISORYOLYMPIA – High school principals from across the state will converge on the Washington State Convention and Trade Center in Seattle next Tuesday to learn more about strategies for successful high school reform. Breaking Ranks II: Strategies for Leading High School Reform will draw more than 350 principals, superintendents and educators together to review ways to implement successful reform efforts and hear profiles of other schools’ successes. The Institute, sponsored by the Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP), is one of 17 presented across the country, thanks to funding support from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and the National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP). Breaking Ranks II is a follow-up to the seminal report, Breaking Ranks, What the Research Shows, published in 1996 by NASSP and the Carnegie Foundation. The original Breaking Ranks outlined more than 80 recommendations for school leaders to implement in order to affect change at the high school level. Breaking Ranks II follows on the heels of that report, providing research-based tactics for principals to use in revitalizing secondary schools. Tuesday’s event will open with a keynote by Seattle Schools Superintendent Raj Manhas, who will address the challenge of transforming today’s high schools. He will be followed by Dr. Ryan Champeau, principal, Waukesha North High School, Waukesha, WI. Champeau helped lead the research team that helped frame the publication of Breaking Ranks II and is a national trainer for implementing Breaking Ranks II strategies in schools.
