Spokane ValleyPrincipal to Join
National Principals’ Group
East Valley High’s Jeff Miller nominated to lead the
region’s secondary school principals
OLYMPIA
– The Association of Washington School Principals (AWSP), the
state’s largest professional association for school building
administrators, today announced that East Valley High School Principal
Jeff Miller has been nominated as Region 7 Representative to the
National Association of Secondary School Principals (NASSP) Board of
Directors. His nomination is expected to be confirmed at NASSP’s
Annual Business Meeting on Feb. 25.
NASSP is the national voice
for middle level principals, high school principals and assistant
principals, providing members with professional development
opportunities and research on school leadership issues. The
association is divided into eight regions; Region 7 is comprised of
Alaska, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Montana, Nevada, Oregon, Utah
and Washington. Miller will serve as Region 7 Representative for four
years.
“I’m excited to be
able to represent Washington state in this capacity,” said
Miller of his new appointment. “As with any leadership position,
communication will be essential to this position. I look forward to
sharing the views of our state with our colleagues at the regional and
national level. I also hope to bring back some new ideas and
perspectives for our schools.”
Miller was selected by peer
representatives from the state’s middle and high school
affiliates, the Association of Washington Middle Level Principals and
the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals. He has been
active in the state association for a number of years, recently serving
as president of the high school board. He has been a school principal
for 18 years, including 10 at East Valley High.
“Jeff has been a strong
leader at the state level through his involvement on our high school
board, and he has a solid understanding of the challenges faced by
secondary school leaders,” said Gary Kipp, executive director of
AWSP. “This is an amazing opportunity to serve education through a
leadership role in the world's largest education administrator
organization. I know that Jeff will continue to represent the interests
and concerns of his colleagues both locally and around the state in his
new role.”
Washington state now has two
principals—both from the Spokane area—on national
principal boards. In addition to Miller’s appointment to the NASSP
Region 7 position, Arlington Elementary Principal John Luher is the Zone
9 director for the National Association of Elementary School Principals
(NAESP).
