Keynoters:

SUNDAY:

Banquet Performance by The Capitol Steps

Thirty years ago, the Capitol Steps began as a group of Senate staffers who set out to satirize the very people and places that employed them. Taken together the performers have worked in a total of 18 Congressional offices and represent 62 years of collective House and Senate staff experience.

Since they began, the Capitol Steps have recorded over 30 albums, including their latest, Take the Money and Run — for President! and their special holiday release, Barackin’ Around the Christmas Tree. They’ve been featured on NBC, CBS, ABC, and PBS.

MONDAY:

Monday's sessions will focus on the three new Teacher Evaluation Models approved by Washington state:

Robert Marzano of The Marzano
Research Laboratory, sharing the
Marzano Framework

Charlotte Danielson of
The Danielson Group, sharing the Danielson Framework

Anneke Markholt, Associate Director
of the Center For Educational Leadership, sharing the U. of WA CEL 5D Model

Marzano, Danielson and Markholt will present an overview of their models on Monday morning. Attendees will have the opportunity to attend follow-up sessions focused on the three models. Alternative breakout sessions will also be offered.

TUESDAY:

The AWSP Leadership Framework for Principal Evaluation

Gene Sharratt, AWSP Leadership Framework Project Manager, and Gary Kipp, AWSP Executive Director

Like the three instructional frameworks, the leadership framework structure is critical to the successful implementation of the state’s new principal evaluation expectations.  The same requirements that our districts are grappling with related to teacher evaluation also apply to principal evaluation.

This session will approach the same elements that were discussed in yesterday’s general session with the three instructional framework authors:

  • How research supports the framework
  • How Washington’s 8 principal evaluation criteria are addressed
  • Key strengths of the framework
  • The role of evidence gathering when putting the framework into practice

This session is designed to be interactive and provide for opportunities for Q & A.

Pre-Conference Sessions

Attendees may choose to add on one or more pre-conference sessions to the conference registration. Intern/Student members qualify for a discount on half-day workshops only. See the registration form for details.

Saturday, June 23 | 1-4 p.m. (Half-day, concurrent)

  1. Building Your Teachers', Your Districts' and Your Own Capacity for Success Through Reflective Practice
Janice Watson, WSLA Instructor and Coach; and Gordon Linse, Executive Director of Teaching and Learning, Puget Sound ESD

Research suggests that consistent, reflective practice — both individually and collectively — results in profound and positive changes in classroom instruction, the tone of our school communities, and our own leadership skills. In this interactive session, we will consider what constitutes reflective practice, including the opportunity to explore some foundational reflective tools and strategies. Participants will practice reflection, pondering how principals and district leaders can use the strategies presented.

  2. The Collaborative Problem Solving Approach: Understanding and Helping Students with Social, Emotional, and Behavioral Challenges
Dr. Ross Greene, Founder of Lives in the Balance

The Collaborative Problem Solving (CPS) approach was first described by Dr. Ross Greene in his book, The Explosive Child, and more recently in his book, Lost at School. At the conclusion of this session, attendees will be able to:

  • Describe how different interpretations of challenging behavior can lead to dramatically different approaches to intervention, and why conventional reward and punishment procedures may not be effective for many challenging kids
  • Identify and assess cognitive skills central to adaptively handling life’s social, emotional, and behavioral challenges
  • Identify and prioritize unsolved problems precipitating challenging behavior, and much more.

Participants in this workshop will leave with an understanding of the underpinnings of the CPS model, along with practical assessment and intervention tools that can be brought back to and used in diverse settings.

Sunday, June 24 | 1-4 p.m. (Half-day, concurrent)

  1. Standards-Based Education: Systemic Structure for School Reform
    Federal Way Public Schools

This interactive workshop provides participants with tools to use in the SBE process, including information on identifying power standards, unpacking standards, writing learning targets, identifying cognitive rigor, and creating high quality assessments. It will provide an in-depth look at SBE in the areas of English Language Arts, Science and Math. Discuss how SBE supports the new teacher-principal evaluation systems from both the principal and district level perspectives. Learn more at the FWPS website.

  2. The High-Performance Administrator: Working Smarter with 21st Century Tools
Justin Baeder, Principal, Olympic View Elementary, Seattle PS

Learn how to fully make the leap into digital organization in this high-impact session, which will include specific focus on the iPad. Increase your productivity as a leader by using technology to manage your time and work. You’ll learn how administrators use the iPad for walk-throughs, email, documentation, and more. If you have one already, bring your iPad and learn about specific apps that will make a difference in your daily work.

Sunday, June 24 | 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. (Full-day)

  1. Unleashing the Power and Potential of the New Evaluation System: Five Skills Every Leader Will Need to Succeed
Heather Knight, President, Leadership Innovations Team, LLC

The legislation is clear. Every principal will need to evaluate using a rubric and be able to provide feedback and ongoing support to teachers to improve instruction. Learn how to unleash the power and potential of the new system by developing five key instructional leadership skills. Participants will practice calibrating observations to ensure evaluations are consistent, learn strategies for supporting teacher growth over time, practice providing feedback in challenging conversations, and more.
