Introduction to the Washington State Education Leadership Intern Program (State-Funded Interns)

The Washington State-funded Education Leadership Intern Program was established as part of the education improvement legislation passed in 1993 for the intent of training prospective principals, program directors and superintendents to lead the standards-based education model instituted in our state’s schools.

The state-funded intern program provides school districts with teacher substitute cost reimbursements for the release of administrator intern candidates from their teaching positions in order to engage in on-the-job training with a mentor administrator. Districts are reimbursed for days of release time at current daily substitute rates as set by the state. The number of days varies annually. Principal intern candidates are required by WAC to engage in 720 hours of training, half of which must be when students and staff are present during the regular school day. Ninety-nine percent of the intern candidates are for principal training. The Washington universities that train administrators also require interns to follow their classroom learning with on-site field experience prior to the possibility of becoming an initial administrator.

Washington state universities and colleges that provide intern programs approved by the Washington Professional Educator Standards Board:

  • Central Washington University
  • City University
  • Eastern Washington University

Intern Advisory Committee

An advisory committee created by the Office of the Superintendent of Public Instruction with representatives from OSPI, AWSP, WASA, higher education and interns, meets twice a year. AWSP Intern Membership - Open to those who are pursuing a career in administration and are working to obtain their principal credentials.

What an exciting time to consider becoming a building administrator. With the pressures of ever-increasing expectations upon schools and students, as well as budget shortfalls, one might question the wisdom of this plan of action. Let us assure you that you join a group of dedicated professionals who have faced difficult challenges before and still march on, trying to protect and enhance that which is best in teaching and learning. It is a time in which characteristics such as commitment, flexibility, cooperation and leadership will allow principals and assistant principals to stand tall and do what is best for students.

A primary goal of our professional association is to encourage and support talented educators who choose to go into school administration. We are seeing a tremendous turnover in administrators, and we need to have the next generation well prepared to take up the torch. As the only professional association that focuses on the needs and interests of principals and assistant principals, we serve over 97 percent of the principals and assistant principals in Washington state. Your participation as an intern member will provide you the same access to workshops, professional development and publications that are available to practicing principals. Specific advantages to you through this intern membership include:

  • Receipt of AWSP's print and electronic publications
  • Online news and resources including "Members Only" content and access to hundreds of employment listings
  • Workshops focused on the specific leadership needs of interns
  • 50% reduction of registration fee for AWSP conferences:

The Principals' Conference (fall)

Assistant Principals' Leadership Conference (winter)
