INSTRUCTIONAL LEADERSHIP AND MANAGEMENT: WORKING WITH MANY KINDS OF SMART!--Presented by Marilyn McGuire, Monday Keynote Speaker
The ability of the principal leader to help staff members address the needs of ALL students is deeply rooted in common beliefs about student achievement for ALL students, clear and indepth knowledge of instruction, management best practice and continuous feedback loops. How does a leader create a positive, ordered, learning-focused environment where staff members see all children as "all our children," where children with many kinds of intelligence can and will successfully achieve in each classroom? What focus, skills and structures ensure that success for staff, students and you? What land mines do you need to avoid? Principals' Summer Leadership Retreat

Leavenworth—Sleeping Lady Resort
Presenters: Terry Barber, educational consultant
Dr. Shann Ferch, lead consultant, Leadership Spirit International

COURAGE TO BE A SERVANT-LEADER--Presented by Dr. Shann Ferch
Robert Greenleaf’s thought regarding the servant-leader continues to transform society. Greenleaf viewed the servant-leader as a person able to live from a heart of grace and strength, a person with whom others become more wise, more healthy, and more free. The courage involved in this endeavor creates courage in those around us, and causes us to more humbly seek to understand the nature of leadership. Deep listening, the pursuit of healthy leadership skills, and a lifestyle of reflection help produce interior maturity. A natural outgrowth of interior maturity is the will to relate well to others: in this interactive presentation servant-leadership is the start point for conversations on the interior of the leader and the art of leadership.

REFRESH YOURSELF AT THE WELL--Presented by Terry Barber
The life of an administrator is nothing short of frenetic! Time, events and people relentlessly press in upon you. You move from one thing to another with hardly a moment to breathe let alone to reflect thoughtfully or more deeply. As a leader you willingly carry the challenge of moving people to a better place. You recognize a moral imperative to do your best for the sake of the students you serve.
The challenge of being a leader demands a lot of physical and emotional energy. When your well runs dry, who or what refills it? This session of the Leadership Retreat will provide you the opportunity to explore issues important to your leadership – courage, fairness, caring, and respect. Refresh yourself at the well. "Seek new sources of vigor, meaning and hope to enrich your life and leave a better legacy for those who come after you." (Bolman and Deal)

Target Audience: Principals, assistant principals and superintendents

Today's Classroom: Foundations of and Current Trends in Education
This course will introduce you to American education, from its history and the governmental policies that have guided it, down to the actual workings within today's classroom. Education reflects the culture and values of society, and, when these change, education follows suit. Reform efforts in society have dramatically altered American education, and this course will present an overview of these changes and the challenges that beset the classroom teacher. The role of the teacher has changed significantly over the past decade. Teachers are the facilitators of acquiring knowledge rather than the possessors of knowledge. Students need to be active learners during their schooling experience, and the responsibility of education does not lie solely with the teacher; students, families and community members are all participants in the educational process of a child. This course will open your eyes to the world of education, and will equip you with teaching strategies to be an effective teacher and ensure that no child is left behind.
