Building-wide Discipline Strategies
Shoreline Conference Center—Cromwell Room (www.shorelinecenter.com)
Presenters: Mark Boynton, educational
consultant
Attendees will learn that building-wide discipline starts in the
classroom and is a “driver” of discipline throughout the
building. After a brief overview of the four critical components of a
prevention-based approach to classroom discipline, the workshop focuses
on discipline outside of the classroom. The twelve critical
prevention-based approaches to building-wide discipline and strategies
for maintaining structure in the halls, lunch room, fields and
assemblies are reviewed. Learn specific approaches for maintaining an
effective office referral system, appropriate dress code, violence and
gang prevention policies. The importance of on-going assessment of the
building discipline system, teaching the building rules, fostering
student pride and developing an effective anti bullying program
(including cyber bullying) are emphasized. Attendees will learn that a
building will never have a structured environment if staff members see
enforcement of the agreed up policies as an “option” rather
than a requirement. The workshop goes over the five critical components
of an effective building-wide system of consequences as well as five
critical consequences that, when implemented, will enable the entire
staff by decreasing the severity and rate of rule violations. Videos of
schools using these approaches will be used to provide visual examples
of their effectiveness.
