High School  Overview of High School Programs

Name/Date/Location/Forms Description

Award of Excellence & Program Direction

The Washington Association of Student Councils has developed a recognition program for high achieving student leadership programs for high schools and local associations (a group of high schools organized for a purpose). The Award of Excellence program is based around the WASC Board’s definition of a student leader:

Student leaders strive to nurture and empower all students to make a difference in their schools, communities and world. A student leader displays integrity, cooperation and respect toward self and others.

In a speech to welcome delegates to the annual high school WASC Conference held October 8-10 at Bothell High, WASC Board President Elizabeth Reeves outlines the purpose and passion around the WASC Board’s Award of Excellence program as well as their 2010-11 commitment to the Safe Schools Survey.

The Award of Excellence programs is designed to be a guide to a student leadership team’s yearly effort to improve school climate and make a positive difference in the world.

GEAR UP support programs

Information

In the spring of 2008, Washington Student Leadership served seven of the 37 schools in Washington with GEAR UP grants. A successful match was experienced between the Washington Student Leadership curriculum and the GEAR UP program. In addition, AWSP's Cispus and Chewelah Peak learning centers and their challenge course facilities were incorporated into some of the GEAR UP programs. To better serve all of the GEAR UP grant schools, Washington Student Leadership has developed three program offerings. Each program is based around the cornerstone concepts of know yourself, know your options and know how to work with others.

A Bilingual Leadership Workshop for Middle Level Latino Students

¡La Chispa! (The Spark) is a one-day leadership workshop designed for middle level Latino student leaders. Building off the successful curriculum pioneered at the high school La Cima Bilingual Leadership Camp, ¡La Chispa! inspires young leaders to dream, learn and act. Through engaging, high-energy activities, students interact with high school and college-age Latino role models, participate in teambuilding and leadership lessons and explore the challenges of living a bicultural existence. The program is delivered in a bilingual and biliterate environment to promote the value of reading, writing and speaking two languages. Attending adults meet separately during a portion of the conference to dialogue regarding how to best meet the unique challenges Latino student leaders face inside and outside of school. Currently, 25% of the seven year olds in the U.S. are Latino while the high school drop-out rate for Latinos hovers around 35%. Expand your tool kit for working with Latino students, parents and coworkers at this timely workshop. The workshop is designed for school staff teams of up to four, and it is appropriate for elementary, middle level and high schools. Jim (a product of U.S. Anglo culture) and Rosemary (a product of the Latino culture) bring a highly personal, yet researched approach to their subject.
