GEAR UP support programs

Information

In the spring of 2008, Washington Student Leadership served seven of the 37 schools in Washington with GEAR UP grants. A successful match was experienced between the Washington Student Leadership curriculum and the GEAR UP program. In addition, AWSP's Cispus and Chewelah Peak learning centers and their challenge course facilities were incorporated into some of the GEAR UP programs. To better serve all of the GEAR UP grant schools, Washington Student Leadership has developed three program offerings. Each program is based around the cornerstone concepts of know yourself, know your options and know how to work with others.

Custom Workshops and Trainings Besides organizing statewide events, Washington Student Leadership can come to your school's doorstep. We will work with your school to design a custom workshop that fits the unique needs of your students or staff. Workshops can be three hours or three-day retreats.

Raising Student Voice & Participation (RSVP) is a student engagement program sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils and the national Association of Secondary School Principals. The RSVP process uses democratic dialogue to give students a chance to speak out and take action on school improvement and community issues. Washington State is one of ten states selected to pilot the program during the 2006-07 school year.

Middle Level  Overview of Middle Level Programs

Name/Date/Location/Form Description

Middle Level Team Retreat

Each school that attends the Middle Level Team Retreat comes to the leadership training with unique goals. Some schools bring up a team of adults and students committed to a specific project or concept such as school climate. Other schools utilize the retreat to blend their 6th grade leaders into student leadership. Still others use the experience to train and unite their elected student officers. The Middle Level Team Retreat is designed to increase a school's teamwork skills by exploring concepts related to communication, group process, project planning, self-awareness and human relations.

In addition to increasing a school's effectiveness as a leadership team, student leaders and their advisers have a chance to network and share ideas, create action plans for the school year and develop individual leadership skills.

Staff members from the popular middle level summer leadership camps facilitate the retreat. Student leaders from high school leadership programs are the Resident Counselors (RCs) for the retreat. The RCs serve as positive roles models, supervise the student dorms and help facilitate retreat activities.
