HEARST FOUNDATION UNITED STATES SENATE YOUTH PROGRAM SCHOLARSHIPS
About the ProgramThe annual United States Senate Youth Program was established in 1962 by United States Senate Resolution 324 and is sponsored by the Senate and fully funded by the William Randolph Hearst Foundation. Each year two high school juniors or seniors from each of the 50 states and the District of Columbia attend the all-expense paid, week-long tour of Washington, D.C.—to observe the federal government in action and meet key officials. Students visit Capitol Hill, the White House, State Department, Supreme Court and Pentagon and tour Washington landmarks. Each student receives a $5,000 college scholarship for undergraduate studies. The 2012 program will be held in Washington, D.C., March 3-10, 2012. For further information, please go to www.ussenateyouth.org. In Washington state, the United States Senate Youth Program is managed by the Washington Association of Secondary School Principals (WASSP). Each summer, WASSP sponsors, a series of week-long Student Leadership Camps for student body officers, class officers, cheerleaders, team captains and other student leaders. A selection process is identified and implemented at each camp session with two students being selected as state finalists for the Senate Youth Program Scholarships. Students must attend a Washington state student leadership camp to be considered for this scholarship. For further information on leadership camps, please go to AWSP's Student Leadership Summer Camps Web page. In the fall, WASSP appoints a committee to examine the transcripts and recommendation letters of the finalists from each of the student leadership camps. The committee interviews each finalist and selects two students to receive the United States Senate Youth Scholarship. Two students are also selected as alternates.
