Latino Youth Today and Tomorrow: Essay by Vincent
Perez, Founder of La Cima
|
Hispanic Heritage Month: September 15 to October 15
Hispanic Heritage Month starts September 15 and ends
October 15. September 15 was chosen as the starting point for the
celebration because it is the anniversary of independence of five Latin
American countries: Costa Rica, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras and
Nicaragua. In addition, Mexico celebrates their independence day on
September 16 and Chile on September 18. People who trace their roots to
Spain, Mexico and the Spanish-speaking nations of Central America, South
America and the Caribbean currently represent 15% of the total
population in the United States.

| La Cima Bilingual Leadership Camp was created in
the summer of 2003 to impart leadership and life skills
to Latino youth in Washington state. Each year, more and more
schools are discovering La Cima. Latino student leaders are finding
their voice at La Cima and they are returning to their homes
equipped with the skills to create positive changes in their schools and
communities. |
