About Washington Student Leadership

AWSP has a long tradition and strong commitment to developing future leaders. Guided by the goals and objectives of Washington Student Leadership, AWSP's student leadership program is recognized as a national model of excellence.

The Association sponsored its first student leadership conference in 1956. Since that time, AWSP has continued to grow and adapt its student leadership programs to meet the changing needs of both students and schools. In fact, Washington state’s programs are routinely recognized by both the National Association of Secondary School Principals and the National Association of Student Councils for their outstanding dedication to the development of successful student leaders.

Students and schools can access leadership training and other student-related programs through a variety of means, including summer camps, regional workshops, curriculum materials and conferences. AWSP’s student programs serve more than 10,000 students, coaches and advisers annually.

Of all of its programs, the most popular are AWSP’s summer leadership camps, which include eight high school student leadership camps, four middle level leadership camps and three Cheerleadership camps, held on both sides of the state at the Cispus Learning Center in Randle, Chewelah Peak Learning Center in Chewelah and at Central Washington University in Ellensburg.

Each of AWSP’s student camps and workshops utilize best practices and materials from the Washington Association of Student Councils (WASC). WASC is a student-led organization that promotes and provides leadership development opportunities to prepare and empower students to serve their schools and communities. Membership in WASC is open to students in all Washington state middle and high schools. WASC is governed by a board comprised of student representatives from each high school chartered interhigh in the state. Two students from the WASC Board also serve as liaisons to the Washington State Board of Education.
