Washington Association of Student Councils (WASC)

Learn more about WASC
The Washington Association of Student Councils is a member organization open to both middle level and high schools. Member schools receive discounts on programs sponsored by Washington Student Leadership and many other benefits, including subscriptions to the electronic newsletter, In the Loop, and the issue-driven print newsletter, The Leader.

Since its inception in the 1960s, the WASC Board has been a voice for high school students in Washington. By organizing a Local Association of Student Councils (LASC), you become eligible for representation. With its connection to students through a network of LASCs across the state, the WASC Board is an important stakeholder in the state's educational community as well as the national student leadership community. Additionally, the student representatives on the State Board of Education are selected by and serve on the WASC Board.

A current student-engagement project endorsed by the WASC Board is the Raising Student Voice and Participation (RSVP) program. The RSVP program is sponsored by the National Association of Student Councils and the National Association of Secondary School Principals. The popular program uses democratic dialogue to give students a chance to speak out and take action on issues in their schools and communities that are important to them.

In past years, the WASC Board has partnered with other organizations on statewide issues and initiatives. With the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction, the WASC Board co-created a student-led information campaign designed to engage freshmen in meaningful dialogue about their education. When a rash of unsportsmanlike conduct rippled through the state, the Washington Interscholastic Activities Association approached the WASC Board for solutions. To improve school climate in public schools, the WASC Board co-sponsored a Diversity Summit with the Washington State School Directors' Association. Additionally, the WASC Board sponsors the WASC Conference, an annual statewide leadership workshop for high school student leaders and advisers.
