HOUSE EDUCATION

Monday, the House Education Committee held a public hearing on three bills of interest to principals.

E2SSB 5179 - Concerning paraeducators and addresses minimum employment standards for paraeducators who work in LAP and ELL.

2SSB 5252 - Creating a program to implement regional safety and security centers by authorizing ESDs to implement regional school safety and security program modeled after the ESD in Yakima. AWSP signed in support of the bill.

ESB 5419 - Enacting the student user privacy in education rights act and addresses the obligations of school service providers with regard to transparency, choice and control, and safeguards. AWSP signed in support of the bill.

Tuesday, the Committee held a work session on school changes impact on academic performance and included presentation by David Mancuso of the Department of Social and Health Services, Christopher Blodgett of WSU, Kristin Moore of Child Trends, and Susan Richards of Communities in Schools.

The Committee also passed out of executive session two bills.

ESSB 5083 – Enacting the sudden cardiac arrest awareness act, which requires the WIIA to develop and make available an online pamphlet athletes, parents, and coaches information about sudden cardiac arrest.

SSB 5294 – Concerning school library and technology programs by changing the name of school-library media program to the school library information and technology program.

SENATE EARLY LEARNING & K–12 EDUCATION COMMITTEE

Monday, the Committee held a public hearing on one bill of interest to principals.

E2SHB 1546 - Concerning dual credit opportunities provided by Washington state’s public institutions of higher education by providing students with more dual credit opportunities and clarifying the Running Start program and the College In The High School program. AWSP signed in support of the bill. The bill was passed out of the Committee on Tuesday.

Tuesday, the Committee held a public hearing on one bill of interest to principals.

HB 2023 - Changing the deadline for notices of nonrenewal of contracts for certificated school employees so that school districts have until June 15 to send notices of a contract nonrenewal or a transfer to a subordinate certificated position to certificated employees if the omnibus appropriations act has not passed the Legislature by the end of the regular legislative session, rather than if the omnibus appropriations act has not passed by May 15.

Tuesday, Red Rock Elementary School (Royal School District) principal Theresa Ellers and Assistant Principal Linda Achondo visited with legislators in Olympia.
